Third-party liability insurance for cars and motorbikes is compulsory
Are you a motorist? Then you are obliged to take out third-party liability insurance to cover any damage you may cause to third parties on the road. This means that, if you hit another vehicle, this insurance will compensate the victim or even the passengers in your own vehicle.
If you have dog, hunt or boat, then third-party liability insurance is mandatory
Here again, it is a question of protecting others in the event of an accident. Imagine that your dog escapes, crosses the road and causes a motorist to veer off the road as they try to avoid your four-legged friend. As the dog’s owner, you are ultimately responsible. Civil liability insurance, also known as “family civil liability”, will then take care of the reimbursement of material damages or possible bodily injuries such as invalidity. You will be asked for proof of insurance when you register your dog with your local authority.
The boat third-party liability insurance is mandatory whether you have a boat, a windsurf, a motorboat or a small sailboat. It covers you if you accidentally hit a swimmer or another boat.
Hunting third-party liability insurance is a specific and compulsory insurance for hunters. In fact, in order to renew their hunting licence, licence holders must provide an insurance certificate each year.
In addition to these compulsory insurance policies, other insurance policies are strongly recommended to protect you as you go about your everyday life:
Civil liability insurance to cover all everyday claims
This insurance covers damage that you may unintentionally cause to third parties in the course of your private life.
For example, your children break the neighbour's window during a boisterous game of football. You injure a passer-by while driving your electric scooter. Or you lose control of your drone, which cuts off a car and causes an accident.

Health insurance to cover costs not reimbursed by the National Health Fund
Dental care, consultations or hospital treatment are often subject to extra charges. In the case of childbirth for example, hospitalisation costs quickly reach €2000 when mothers-to-be choose to stay in a single room. The same is true for spectacle wearers, as the amount reimbursed by the National Health Fund for lenses and frames are capped. To protect your family in the event of a serious accident when there is no third party responsible, we advise you to take out personal “accident” insurance. This type of policy provides for the payment of compensation in the event of death or invalidity following an accident, according to the terms chosen at the time of subscription.
