What are the most magnificent motorbike rides in Luxembourg?
With spring just around the corner, you will soon be able to get back in the saddle of your two-wheeler to roam the gorgeous Luxembourg countryside. Fancy some new ideas by way of inspiration? Here are some of the favourite rides of the Grand Duchy’s bikers.
In the north, the Éislek a.k.a. Oesling region
‘Discovering the sheer beauty of the scenery around us’ just about sums up William’s driving force. William works as an IT manager in Bertrange. Having set up home in Luxembourg some 5 years ago, he has embraced Luxembourg as his adoptive country which also prompted him to get his motorcycle driving licence.
“Wherever you are in Luxembourg, the countryside is always just outdoors, which makes even the shortest ride by motorbike just a great fun experience. And the roads here are in very good shape”.
Having recently set up home in the northern part of the country, William has been making the most of his time by discovering his new region, the Sûre valley in the Luxembourg Ardennes, with a wealth of heritage that continues to amaze him.
“It’s got rolling hills, bends and the changing scenery caters for all tastes. You are riding alongside a lake, a château, in places the road is bordered by rock formations that make you feel you are somewhere entirely else”.
Moreover, the bikers of the Grande Région as the wider region is known, are not wrong. Every weekend, this route is a favourite among bikers coming in from Belgium and Holland.
The route: 22 km riding from Insenborn to Bourscheid passing along Esch sur Sûre.

Valley of the Seven Castles (Vallée des 7 châteaux) in the heart of the country
This winding valley stretches for some thirty km along the river Eisch in Luxembourg, all the way up to where it joins the Alzette in Mersch. You will find yourself riding your motorbike through the heart of some of Luxembourg’s most idyllic forests and most picturesque villages.
To complete your ride taking in all seven medieval castles, you should reckon with around one hour by motorbike, following route no. 105:
- Château de Septfontaines (18th century);
- Château de Koerich (now a ruin, 12th century);
- Château d'Ansembourg (14th century);
- Grand château d'Ansembourg (17th century);
- Château de Hollenfels (11th century);
- Château de Schoenfels (18th century);
- Château de Mersch (18th century).

💡 William’s tip: from Mersch, you can still ride for another 15 km heading south-east to discover Bourglinster Castle which is home to a famous vegetarian gastronomic restaurant (1 Michelin star) as well as a brasserie for a bite to eat and a drink en route.
The route: 29 km from Septfontaines to Mersch.

A little further east is Mullerthal
You have probably heard people talking about this jewel in Luxembourg’s crown, commonly referred to as the “Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise” or Little Switzerland. An enchanted forest, at the heart of which the river unfolds much to the delight of visitors.
The route: Before discovering the famous waterfalls, you can also enjoy a ride of some thirty odd kilometres amid pure and unadulterated nature, setting out from Diekirch headed to Medernach before reaching your destination in the Mullerthal.

A motorcycle ride along Luxembourg’s borders
Here’s what David advises. David is the managing director of Luxembourg company based in Bascharage and owns a BMW 1250 RT. To him, motorbike riding is a way of unwinding. He goes out for a ride whenever he gets the chance, ideally with a group of mates. What does he like best? Finding the time one afternoon a week to get on his bike to ride the “border tour”. The mass influx of bikers at the weekend spoils things a little to his liking, as he makes a point of safely riding his motorbike.
“ Riding my bike is sheer bliss to me. I’m not out to ride fast. The contrary is true: I enjoy the scenery, which is all about recharging my batteries.”
The route: Bascharage > Remerchen > Schengen > Grevenmacher, Wasserbillig, Echternach, then climb your way up to Vianden > Clervaux and come back down again following the Belgian border towards Wiltz > Eisch before heading back to Bascharage.
“It’s a calming, peaceful atmosphere The landscape is highly varied. You will find yourself riding alongside vineyards, cutting across villages, riding along the banks of the rivers Moselle and Sûre, and enjoying a fabulous view of the lake. It’s a refreshing, almost otherworldly change of scenery”.
Best stopover for a drink and a bite? Any terrace in Vianden or Echternach.
