Is it necessary to take out specific insurance for electric vehicles?

A hybrid or electric vehicle must be insured just like any petrol or diesel vehicle. In fact, motor insurance policies are the same whatever the drive mechanism. Unfamiliar with motor insurance policies in the Grand Duchy? Here are 7 things you need to know to insure your car in Luxembourg.
How much does electric vehicle insurance cost?

While the policies may be the same, the prices are lower. That’s because AXA is doing its bit to promote greener mobility by granting discounts of 15 to 25% on the insurance premiums of hybrid and electric vehicles. Insuring an electric vehicle is therefore less expensive than an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle.
Are the battery and charging cables covered?
Theft of your battery and charging cables is covered if you have taken out car insurance with Theft cover. This type of cover is not included in third party insurance, so it’s always a good idea to check your policy with your insurer.
At AXA, you are covered from the "Active + mini-casco" option onwards in the event of theft of your battery or charging cable.
What about charging stations?
If you install a charging station at home, it is insured and covered under your home insurance policy.
What happens if I break down?
Please note: in Luxembourg, assistance in the event of a breakdown is not included by default in car insurance policies. Remember to take out this option to be eligible for assistance in case of electrical breakdown or a flat battery. At AXA, this option will cost you around € 75 per year.
