Hail: What do I do if I have suffered damage?
It is not uncommon for hail storms to cause significant damage to car bodywork or even buildings (especially if the hailstones are large). What are the first things to do? Who do I need to contact? Am I properly insured? So many questions to be asked straight after the disaster.
The first things to do at home
- If the electricity is still working, turn off the power before approaching damaged areas or rooms.
- If you smell gas, do not use your phone (landline or mobile) to avoid the risk of an explosion.
- Find out about the local situation and any instructions to be followed; it may be that your local authority or the State has put certain important measures in place that you should be aware of.
- Do not approach damaged power or telephone lines.
- Before restoring your home, take as many photos as possible and list the damage.
- Only turn the power back on after checking the electrical system. The same goes for the gas. As soon as you have done this check, it is important to turn on the heating to deal with the damp.
- Before drinking tap water, check with your local council to find out if it is safe to drink.
