Fire: what do I do if I’m struck?

A fire is an impressive phenomenon. Once the fire is under control, there are still steps to be taken. What are the first things to do? Who do I need to contact? Am I properly insured? So many questions to be asked straight after the disaster.

The first things to do once the fire is under control

  • If you smell gas, do not use your phone (landline or mobile) to avoid the risk of an explosion.
  • Find out about the local situation and any instructions to be followed; it may be that your local authority or the State has put certain important measures in place that you should be aware of.
  • Return to your home only after receiving authorisation from the authorities. For example, the frame of the house may have weakened, in which case it is not advisable to enter it until the premises are completely safe.
  • Before restoring your home, take as many photos as possible and list the damage.
  • Protect yourself during cleaning: strong rubber boots, goggles, helmet and rubber gloves. Your home is sure to present unusual risks: weak furniture and walls, broken or blunt objects on the ground, etc.
  • If a smell of smoke persists, it will certainly be necessary to clean certain objects several times.
  • Get rid of any food or drink that may have been exposed to heat, smoke or soot.

People to contact
