What do I do after an earthquake?

Whether your home has been damaged or not, care and precautions must be taken after an earthquake. Certain damage may not be visible at first.

The first things to do following an earthquake

  • Find out about the local situation and any instructions to be followed; it may be that your local authority or the State has put certain important measures in place that you should be aware of.
  • Be careful, aftershocks often take place in the hours or days following the first shock.
  • If you have been evacuated, only return to your home after having received permission from the authorities.
  • Do not take the elevator
  • Check for possible causes of damage and serious injury:

- Gas, water and electricity: in the event of a leak, turn off the power supply, notify the authorities and leave your home;

- Your household products: if they have spilled, clean them immediately as some may be highly flammable;

- Possible fire outbreaks: these happen frequently following an earthquake.

  • Do not light candles, lighters or matches, do not smoke.
  • Do not go near electrical cables that have fallen to the ground nor broken gas lines.
  • Be careful when opening your cupboards; items stored inside may have been dislodged.
  • If you have to travel by car, find out about the road conditions and look out for any broken traffic lights.
  • Take an inventory of the damage and take as many photos as possible before cleaning.
