Is your garden properly insured?

The sun is shining, the days are getting longer... and you're looking forward to enjoying your garden again. Before creating the outdoor space of your dreams, here’s a brief reminder of how garden insurance works.

The good news is that, at AXA, most garden damage is covered as standard by your home insurance. So there's no need to take out a specific option, such as a "garden pack" or "garden and outdoor equipment insurance". Whether you’re investing in a new table for entertaining friends or are about to plant new rare species... You’re covered!

Plant cover

A few days after celebrating her wedding, Héléna saw a delivery truck pull up in front of her house. The back hatch lowered to reveal a magnificent hundred-year-old olive tree! “It was a gift from my friends in the Algarve who couldn't make the trip... I was very touched by their kind gesture. My husband and I moved the tree, still in its pot, to our garden, while waiting to arrange for some friends to help us dig a hole and plant it the following weekend. Unfortunately, two days later it was gone. It was stolen from us in the middle of the day!

Héléna's insurance reimbursed her for the value of the tree, a hefty € 800. This sum meant that she was able to buy another olive tree of the same age.

In fact, with AXA, plants are covered up to € 2,500 against theft or vandalism and up to € 3,000 against storm damage. (This ceiling no longer applies in the event of storm or hail if the building has also suffered damage due to bad weather).

Garden furniture cover

Sabrina is a recent homeowner. She loves the house she and her husband have just bought. But the garden was what really clinched it for her. So, to furnish it, she has her sights on buying a designer 3-seater sofa built to withstand the elements. But seeing as this will put her back almost € 3,000, she’s wondering what will happen in the event of theft or hail....

At AXA, all garden furniture is covered by your home insurance up to a maximum amount of € 5,000. Deckchairs, garden chairs and tables, parasols, arbours, patio heaters, everything is included! This also applies to the furniture and plants on your balcony, of course.

Do you have a garden shed? The equipment it contains: chainsaws, hedge trimmers, barbecues, etc. are covered in the event of theft, up to € 2,500, and in full in the event of fire.

The same applies to children's play equipment such as playhouses, trampolines, swings and slides, which are covered under the same conditions as garden furniture in your home insurance policy, without you having to worry about them.

Swimming Pool Cover

For those lucky enough to own a swimming pool (whether in-ground, semi-in-ground or above-ground), make sure you declare it when taking out home insurance. You will then be covered for damage such as: fire to the electrical system, theft of accessories, storm or hail damage, water damage (important if the pool is inside the building). What’s more, by taking out civil liability insurance, the insurance will compensate the victims of accidents that may occur in your pool and for which you are held liable. You should also make sure that you comply with Luxembourg legislation on swimming pool safety devices.

Risks of storms and bad weather

Finally, as Luxembourgers know only too well from the tornado that hit Bascharage in the middle of August 2019, storms and hail are the main dangers for your garden. Parasols and arbours blow away easily in strong winds and hail regularly damages garden furniture.

These risks are also covered by your home insurance. The same applies to repairs to your garden or swimming pool after such bad weather.

To enjoy your garden with complete peace of mind, don't hesitate to contact our agents to take stock of the cover granted by your home insurance policy. And make the most of the good weather!
