Installing an electric car charging point

Have you just bought or are you thinking of buying an electric vehicle? Charging times that are too long, not enough public charging points, this article gives you all the keys to installing a charging point at your home. Whether you're looking for a wall-mounted charging point with or without access control, a charging point suitable for a shared building, or a smart charging point with features to extend your vehicle's range, the choice and options are varied, depending on your search criteria.

Choosing your electric charging point

To choose the right electric charging point, you need to consider a number of factors, such as the type of vehicle, its range, the location of the installation and, above all, the frequency of use.

It's important to determine the range you want to recover on each charge, based on the number of kilometres you drive each day. For example, if you drive less than 30 km a day, a wall-mounted box may be sufficient.

In Luxembourg, specialist companies offer suitable solutions for both private individuals and professionals.

Installation by an Approved Professional

A recharging point must be installed by an approved electrician to ensure compliance with safety standards. In Luxembourg, the list of approved electricians can be consulted on the website of the Fédération du Génie Technique.

Before carrying out any installation work, you should contact your network operator to check the power rating of your electrical installation, to avoid overloading and any risk of power cuts or fire.

The cost and financing of your charging point

Depending on the type of charging point, the power rating and the options and functions chosen (access control, Bluetooth, type of mounting, etc.), the cost of a charging point varies between €750 and €2,000, excluding installation costs.

In 2020, the Luxembourg government launched a wide-ranging programme to support electric mobility. Extended until the end of 2024, the installation of an electric charging point at your home entitles you to state subsidies.

Eligible costs include:

  • The charging point;
  • The technical equipment;
  • Labour for the installation and technical adaptation of the pre-existing installation.

For the installation of a "normal" charging point, you can receive up to €750 in aid and up to €1,200 for an "intelligent" charging point, up to a maximum of 50% of the installation bill, provided you own your home.

Insurance and safety

To limit the risk of damage, installing your charging point in a secure, closed room or garage is the best way to protect your charging point and your car from theft, vandalism, natural disasters (heavy rain, etc.) and temperature fluctuations.

To complete the prevention aspect, it's essential to make sure that your installation is covered by adequate insurance against the risks of voltage surges, short-circuit or fire.

To avoid unpleasant surprises, contact your insurer to check your cover.

AXA has you covered:

  • Your charging cable is reimbursed in the event of theft for up to €500 under the "Active mini-casco" option, and up to €1,000 for the "Privilege" option with your Optidrive car insurance.
  • With your Optihome home insurance, your charging point, which is usually wall-mounted, is insured and covered.

When you take out car insurance with AXA for a hybrid or electric vehicle, you automatically benefit from a reduction in your insurance premium.

By 2023, almost 23% of new cars in Luxembourg will be 100% electric. Installing a charging point at your home is an investment in the future of mobility. By following these steps and choosing the right insurance, you can benefit from a practical and secure recharging solution at home.
