How do you renew your driving licence in Luxembourg?

Everything is handled through the Société Nationale de Circulation Automobile (SNCA). When your licence is about to expire, head to the official renewal application form.

Depending on your preference, you have two options: submit your application online via MyGuichet, or go there in person by appointment. 
Good to know: this standard end-of-validity procedure is different from the one to follow if your precious licence is lost, stolen or damaged.

When do you need to renew your driving licence?

The most common reason? Quite simply, the expiry of your licence (generally 10 years for the card format).

But this is not the only possible situation. You may also need to renew it earlier if:

• You hold specific categories: heavy goods vehicle or public transport licences have a shorter period of validity.
• Your state of health requires it: certain medical restrictions require more frequent checks.
• You still have the old model: switching to the electronic format is mandatory, according to the timetable set by the authorities.

What documents do you need to provide to renew your licence?

To make sure your application goes through the SNCA without a hitch, it is best to submit a complete file. Here is what you will generally be asked for:

• The official renewal application form, duly completed and signed;
• A recent passport photo that complies with biometric standards;
• A valid identity document (identity card or passport);
• A recent medical certificate issued by a doctor approved in Luxembourg (if your licence category or your age requires it);
• Your old driving licence, in its original form.

My licence has expired: what should I do?

Do not panic: even if the validity date has passed, the procedure remains the same and is still handled by the SNCA Just be aware that the administration may require additional documents or examinations depending on how long ago it expired.

One key point to remember above all: it is forbidden to drive with an expired licence. Driving in this situation exposes you to heavy penalties and invalidates your insurance cover.

Can I drive while my application is being processed?

The rule of thumb: always check whether your current licence is still valid. If it is still valid when you submit your application, you can continue driving as normal.

However, if your licence expires before you receive the new one, you must not drive. Depending on your situation and processing times, a temporary certificate may sometimes be issued to you, although it does not replace the licence in every situation.

How much does it cost to renew a licence in Luxembourg?

Renewing your licence involves administrative fees, in the form of an SNCA charge, payable when you submit your application.

When is the best time to renew your licence?

Our advice: do not wait until the last minute. Start the process two to three months before the expiry date shown on your licence. That way, you can avoid the stress of a possible processing delay.

Another good habit: avoid submitting your application during peak periods (for example, just before major holiday departure dates) to make dealings with the administration smoother.
